I think what they've done - which is quite out of character - is deviate from the formula. It's more about the regulars, and something happens that affects them more on a personal basis.

Google says it was called "Helpless" and was broadcast in 1993; the character was Elizabeth Olivet, a psychologist for the DA's office. (And if I hadn't vaguely remembered her name was Elizabeth something, I would never have been able to find that out; thank you, scattershot memory.)
