I'm going to be biting my nails until I see this episode; I've been speculating on this for a week now, and your post isn't making me any more comfortable.

i was too disturbed by the episode (because it was Freema, i guess) and kept switching channels to Heroes. i don't think i can rewatch it.

also on top of all the disturbing of the case, i am so easily disturbed when it comes to police's bias and wrongful proceedings and there was a bit of that in the ep (& hinted in other eps, which is why the "law" part always unsettles me) and i couldn't condone it, even if it was for Alesha; police brutality is my ultimate squick.

Google says it was called "Helpless" and was broadcast in 1993; the character was Elizabeth Olivet, a psychologist for the DA's office. (And if I hadn't vaguely remembered her name was Elizabeth something, I would never have been able to find that out; thank you, scattershot memory.)

Also do you remember the name of the ep it's based on? I'm racking my brain as to this ever happening on the original, and I can't recall anything exactly like it. Certainly there has been a fair share of ADA dramatic incidents, but yeah. This sounds...*whistles*

(Ok, I was gonna use my icon of Martha that says "fight them till you can't" and now I think that's a bit ironic and rather inappropriate!)

Jumping threads--it's "Helpless," I believe. The psychiatrist (Dr. Olivet) is the one who's raped in that episode. I thought it might be the one they'd based this one on and watched it last week.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying. I was going through ADAs trying to make a connection but no dice. You are wise to do the research. I was just under the impression that this UK one was an ep titled after Alesha and I feared the usual L&O disposals of the lady prosecutors. Obv this is different!

When I heard the synopsis and that the ep was called "Alesha," I went straight to the ADAs too, but when I realized which ep it actually was, I got a little sick cause I figured that Alesha would be the one raped.

Lady prosecutors--I did a post about this on my LJ last week, and, yeah, they have a hard time of it!

They really do! Somehow I figured they'd give Alesha the backstory of someone like the Angie Harmon ADA. Cuz it's easier to have it happen ages ago and I didn't think they'd ever let it happen for the character in the present. Clearly Chibnall has more balls than I realized.

I really shouldn't be talking about men and balls or anything like that as it's disrespectful to Alesha. :(

I haven't seen the episode yet, and I'm most curious to see how much of the Olivet story they follow here; if they do all of it, Chibnall wins for balls, because that was a really, really troubling episode from a number of angles.

It's been interesting to see her character develop, because it's felt at times that she's been a blend of Paul Robinette and Claire Kincaid, the ADAs for the episodes that have been sourced for the show (I'm a long-time L&O fan). This adds a very different element to her story and places it in a very problematic space (as far as further episodes go--how does she "recover" and practice?).
