On Martha

You know, it's funny. This time last year, after it was announced that Martha would be back in s4, there was nothing I wanted more than for her to stay in the TARDIS and travel with the Doctor again. And now? Now, I'm so happy she left.

Also, it's a little ironic maybe that, out of her, Rose and Donna, she went through the most when she was with the Doctor, but got the happiest ending and the healthiest relationship with him now.

This is so true! I felt gutted this time last year. Now, even though Donna got shafted...which I'm still contemplating...for the most part, things worked out the best for Martha.

Out of her and Rose, anyway. Donna doesn't HAVE a relationship with him now...*sobs*

I swear I'm not trying to ruin your evening.

Anyway, yes. Martha, my beautiful lady, could I be any more thrilled for you?! I DON'T THINK SO, NO.

Well yes, exactly. *sobs with you*

Martha, my beautiful lady, could I be any more thrilled for you?! I DON'T THINK SO, NO.

I want it to be TW time right now and I'm shipping Martha with pretty much everyone on the show.

I'm very happy for Martha/Tom, but if we're gonna continue to never see him again, I'm really hoping for something that leads to Martha/Mickey because CAN YOU IMAGINE?!

YES YES YES AGAIN. SHE JUST CAN'T GET AWAY FROM THEM SMITHS.

Also, random enhancement of your original post...dude, Rose's second departure was actually more crap than her first. The first at least had the sadness of separation. And this one was sloppy and only vaguely emotional and a long list of things that are hilarious immediately, rather than hilarious after an extended period of time like the original beach scene was.

The original beach scene sort of killed me. And this one? Well, I was a bit WTF because I thought the point was to give Rose her happy ending and I really don't see how she's got it.

Apparently, neither does Rose.

I'm still pointing at the screen going "um, according to the immediately subsequent explanation about how it turns out for half-breeds, Rose's new Doctor's gonna die on her in one...two...three..."

Mainly, I want to know just want to know WTF the logic behind it for the Cardiff lot really is.

That you can't have happy fun time with the Doctor and live happily ever after? Which, you know, isn't the case but maybe that's what they're trying to say.

I really, really don't like that subtext. It's like... the antithesis of what the Doctor is supposed to be for people.

It's also really screwy because it doesn't work like that, Sarah Jane being an excellent example of this.

Maybe it's just a case of Rusty Not Thinking Things Through, which I think he's rather good at.

(Driveby again, sorry:) I think RTD is using the Doctor as a false god that the companions need to see the destructiveness of because he himself doesn't want to be happy (so really he's the *last* guy to make anyone else happy). Transcending the Doctor is what allows them to see their own awesomeness for themselves and that's what makes them better people - believing in their own significance rather than waiting for the Doctor and universe to prove it for them.

It's true of Mickey, Martha and Jack - all the most ostensibly rejected companions - and later Sarah Jane (who seem to come off best in their departures from the Doctor while still having their own issues to resolve).

It's a weird way of getting there but even Donna and Rose will get their eventually. Donna is adequately clever enough to figure it out for herself - if she's anything like Smith in Human Nature/FoB her time with the Doctor will probably stay in her subconscious anyway - and she will (her grandad will support her even if her mother won't).

And what Rose always needed was enough time to be with the Doctor to figure out that what she really needed was an identity of her own and to create her own adventure in her life without living through the Doctor's experience vicariously. Living with human!Ten will probably convince her of that. The interesting thing about human!Ten is that the redeeming Donna-like qualities he inherited might be enough to save a relationship between him and Rose even when she evolves out of her need/desire for him. And those same Donna-like qualities will probably allow him to evolve too.

It's only the Doctor himself that stays stuck because he doesn't actually want to evolve - he wants to stay miserable.

We can only hope Eleven will more or less jettison that attitude.

That is so true. I can picture them still being friends fifty years from now, occasionally meeting up to fight some monster, have a cup of tea and then happily going their own way once more.

I am glad. it sounds like she did got the happiest ending. i haven't watched season four (cause i'm a crazy Martha fangirl and the Tenth Doctor doesn't appeal to me in the least unless Martha is her OFFICIAL COMPANION) but reading what happened I think Rose and Donna got very shitty endings.

and the healthiest relationship with him now.

THEY ARE TOTALLY GOING TO HOOK UP OH SO OFTEN AND BE AWESOME TOGETHER AND FIGHT EVIL OR JUST HANG AROUND AND HAVE BADLY-DISGUISED DATES. I am ever so happy this ending has left all doors open for me to keep on shipping Doctor/Martha.

I promised I would never write fic with Season 4 canon in it but suddenly I have this urge to write Ten calling up on Martha in Torchwood and just hanging around in Cardiff, holding hands down the Cardiff Bay and having a million Starbucks coffees, just talking and being happy to be together for hours on no end.

*sigh*

And eeee. Team Torchwood Take Two is going to be AWESOMESAUCE. :D

[livejournal.com profile] hamsterfactor (who is the one to narrate season four to me, as i have watched no episode lol) was explaining the finale and I was like "WAIT MICKEY SHOWED UP WITHOUT HIS BOYFRIEND?". I was devastated. I know it's horribly fannish to ship them but damnit Mickey/Jake forever.

I can't wait for Mickey-Gwen bonding (THEY CAN EAT PIZZA TOGETHER ON THE COUCH OMG).

AND OMG IF MARTHA AND ANDY MEET I THINK I WILL CRY. My two favourite characters from each side of the Who-verse together, damnit. The only way to top that would be if Alan Jackson joined them.

Torchwood is going to rock so much and you are going to make such awesome icons out of it.

I was just thinking about that too. She's the only companion now who also still has a direct line to the Doctor, whether Moffat will ever take advantage of the phone thing remains to be seen though. Martha is the one too with the most rounded, successful and satisfying life off the TARDIS, she's got a good career in two alien fighting agencies, and a fiancee. I think it's a testament to who she was before she even met the Doctor - she was already confident, strong and independant, and her travels brought that all out big time. And thinking about, Martha is the only one Ten has left now with Donna's mind wiped and Rose trapped on Alt Earth again. There's so much opportunity there to explore that.

I dunno dude... I really think that DONNA is the companion who has gone through the most with the Doctor. She went from being Donna Noble, just a Temp from Chiswick, to being Donna Noble... the Most Important Woman in All of Creation. She grew into an entirely different person, she completely evolved.

I'm not saying that Martha didn't grow as a person whilst travelling with the Doctor, because everybody does. I don't believe that Martha grew to such an extent that Donna did though, nor did she go through such a personal journey as Donna.
For one, Martha started off with a much better life than Donna, and with a LOT more self-confidence.

JUST MY OPINION THOUGH. And I daresay hardcore Martha fans will disagree completely.

What I meant was that more was asked of Martha when she was companion: Farringham, 1969, walking the earth. Donna and Rose never had to do anything like that, not really.

In terms of personal growth, oh God, Donna wins that race by a million miles. *clings to her*

Yeah but the reason Donna wins in the development stakes is because Martha was already ahead when she met the Doctor, meaning most of Martha's development had nothing to do with the Doctor which is probably why it's outlasted her time with him. Any reset of Martha's time with the Doctor would merely put her back where she had always intended to be anyway: on the way to being a doctor, and sorting out her personal life.

That's probably got something to do with the fact that, on Torchwood, we will undoubtedly see more of her than we would should she have gone back to Who.

And I never thought of it like that, but it's so true.
