magicallaw: (dw s3: Martha - totally made of awesome)

I finished my S3 re-watch that I only started yesterday. I don't know, I still think this is the best Nu Who series by far. The stories are better, the themes are more interesting; it's just BETTERER. I like that the relationship between the Doctor and the companion is riddled with angst. Fucking hell, it's more realistic than portraying a relationship that's supposed to be perfect. Martha will always be made of win, NO MATTER WHAT. The last scene in LotTL's always kills me and I always feel so ... well, sad at first, but then good. She should leave him, and I think she realised it along time ago. Probably in Utopia, if not before. I really want to rewatch Reset now because the growth in the character is amazing. The way she carried herself, the way she spoke; maybe it was Freema feeling more confident, but it's definitely noticeable.

Part of the reason I rewatched was to help me along with the TV challenge thingy. I really want to carry on with my Four watching but it occured to me that I've listened to, like, two of the commentaries on this boxset. Yes, I am yet to listen to the Tennant and Gatiss commentary on The Lazarus Experiment; I'm officially the worst fangirl EVAR.

Also, some Doctor/Romana fic fell out of my brain and onto my PC. I'm not sure how, except for the fact that they are completely Meant To Be. I would like to finish it, mainly because it's not crack!fic and I'm trying to remind myself what writing non-crack!fic is like.

Now there is NOTHING on telly and I may be forced to do something else, like, I don't know, read a book. Eeep!

I completely agree with you because series 3 is by far the best one for me too.
I love the darker tone, I think the stories are more inventive, I *love* emo!Doctor and of course I *adore* miss Jones with a fiery passion. And yes, no matter how badly she was treated (which frankly ? Wasn't nearly as bad as fandom makes it to be)that will never have anything to do with the character's awesomeness.
I can't wait to see her interact with the new team TARDIS of orsum next series now !

I think she went through a hell of a lot, probably more so than the majority of previous companions. Her journey on s3 makes me love her even more, though.

Yup I know because it made me feel even more protective of her in the end.

David talks about being covered in lubricant in the Lazarus Experiment commentary! C'MON!

WHAT? You have no idea how tempted I am to call in sick today just so I can listen to this RIGHT NOW.

I love the commentaries, but I have to admit I tend to only listen to the ones that David is on because I just love listening to him being a fanboy. Yeah, I am weak and like a 12-year-old girl about him. For shame.

He is good at commentaries, but other people are too. I'm looking forward to the Blink one as the Moffat is a funny guy too.

Hey, I've only listened to TLotTL commentary - and I've had the boxset since Xmas ! I haven't even re-watched the eps yet ! Too busy watching TW and Classic Who ! So you're NOT the worst fangirl ever !

Rewatching is good. It reminded me that I didn't agree with fandom's view that it was bad.

I've an urge to re-watch Blink, mostly for the sake of the last 5 - 10 mins but I'm putting it off because I've a feeling it'll just result in fic and I'm juggling enough stories at the moment already without adding another one to the mix !

I love S3 with a fiery passion. It is indeed a really good season, with the exception of a few dodgy moments here and there (and I mostly love those dodgy moments even though they make me go "ooooh, that's bad").

Yes, the Dalek eps were a lowpoint. But when it's followed by The Lazarus Experiment, I can't really complain.

I am still wondering why they okay'ed the design of the cocktopus. It's overwhelmingly bad, and the story itself is not that much better, but it has Martha being really clever and thinking fast on her feet, so I can't quite hate those eps. I'm just not as fond of them as I am of the rest of the season. And then, as you say, came The Lazarus Experiment, and so many good things after that.

LMFAO cocktopus. That...that's brilliant. *cries* So brilliant. I actually like those episodes for Martha being all dynamic and Ten being friendly and trusting her/encouraging her with so much. But the cocktopus and the sappy humanity was not so much. My overall reaction to the episodes was that they were okay. My least favorite, by a lot, was Shakespeare Code, because, I just remember thinking the idea was badly executed. And Utopia (except the glorious last ten minutes) because why is humanity burgeoning in population still at the freaking end of time?! It bugged me. (I decided that they can't possibly be pure human since it was already addressed in s1 that they spread out through the universe and mated into other species, and therefore they've gotten closer genetically to one of those old who alien races that look exactly like humans. Yep.) Everything else, I actually really enjoyed. ...er, sorry for rambling at you.

I did like The Shakespeare Code, actually - not so much for the plot, but rather a lot for Martha's reactions to visiting the past.

They did explain the whole thing about humans being humans at the end of the universe - I think it was something about how humanity will always revert back to the same basic shape. It made enough sense to me, anyway, to stop me from pondering it. I really wondered who the Futurekind was, though - were they humans gone primitive? That bothered me more than why humanity was still present at the end of time.

I think my least favourite is the Daleks episodes - but when I say 'least' it's in a 'still love them, just not as much as some of the other episodes' way. I may be physically incapable of hating anything that has Martha in it.

My reaction was that the futurekind probably had more human in them than the "humans." Because what with the chaos of the end of time, and I don't think anything would stay evolutionarily stable for so freaking long.

Hee. Yeah, I still enjoyed the Dalek episodes well enough. And even Shakespeare Code had its moments.

I agree about s3. The stories and the overarching theme were really intricately done, and even despite the things that annoyed me about what the writers did, I do like the openly complicated Ten/Martha dynamic. And I like dark, so the series' darkness, I ate it up. Also, I pretty much think Ten's characterization was an interesting and natural progression for the Doctor. I'd like to see him move on through it, but still.

But I also love series 1, because it was tightly put together and it had Nine in it, and he had a sort of centered gravitas that brought everything together, even through the occasional devolutions into camp (and I'm an old school lover, so why would that bit bother me?). Basically, it's just s2 that was sadly weak for me.

Series 2 started off brilliantly, but they forgot about episodes 1-4 up until halfway through Doomsday. It just didn't link as well as S1 and S3.

I started watching s3 last night too. I'm part way through ep 13 commentary. Season 3 was great on a par with series 1. Just the execution of ep 13 and the script itself was a major letdown. I do like the fact that Martha left the Doctor.

She has completely out grown him by then. I think I would have been disappointed if she hadn't left him. Well, a little bit.

In contrast, Jack still needs the Doctor's acceptance of him I think.
