1. I know a few of you on my flist have had this, but why comment on a fic by saying 'well, I don't like the pairing you have written but it was good anyway'. Why do people do this? OK, so they're D/R shippers not D/M. Great, good for them. In a way it's like they're justifying reading the story to themselves. It's OK guys, you haven't cheated on anyone.

At least I didn't get flamed for posting it. That's a blessing I suppose.

I did have to bite my tongue in one response though, where the reviewer said he/she liked my portrayal of Martha because she wasn't clingy or pathetic like others had portrayed her. I dread to think what they have been reading. Or what others have been writing for that matter.

2. The prompt battle on [livejournal.com profile] cute_boots is up and running if you fancy a go.

3. I just read that in the next issue of SFX magazine Phil Collinson is going to be commenting on the ring on Martha's hand in those promo pics. I'd kind of forgotten about all of that what with recent spoilers and what not but this has made me curious again.

4. CAN IT BE CHRISTMAS NAO? ONCOMING STORM FTW.

I'm glad my brother's a regular reader of SFX 'cos I'll be phoning him to DEMAND he tell me what Phil has said - I don't want to wait until I go home for Xmas to read it for myself !

Edited to add ('cos I'm an eejit)

WTF with point 1 ?!?! I mean really WTF ?! WHY do people do that ? It's completely pointless and stupid ! If you don't like the ship, don't read the fic MORONS !

(Sorry, I'll stop shouting now !)

Actutally the news'll probably be all over the Comms anyway within minutes of people getting their subscription copies !

Thing is, I probably wouldn't read it unless it had been rec'd to me. I suppose that it could be seen as a compliment cos they liked it despite the pairing. Unfortunately, I doubt that was their motive.

1. It's to chastise people for writing the "wrong" pairing. I usually reply with "well, I don't like it when people comment to tell me they don't like the pairing because that has nothing to do with what I choose to write, but this was a nice comment anyway". It's amazing how those types of comments trickle away if you do that.

I have a very close personal friend, who's a die-hard OTP. To the point where she thinks Martha's a terrible character, they should have killed her off, etc. More to the point, she has some serious sad ideas about Rose that would equal her not growing up at all. She thinks I am wrong, I think she is wrong. We're still friends. She even betas for me. I don't know why that end of the pool keeps thinking they're superior, and that liking Martha is tantamount to raping the goat. Makes no sense.

1. Lame feedback sads me. I got "I like it when Martha-centric fics make use of her mental skills instead of just focusing on her jealousy over Rose...." the other day, which wasn't lame in and of itself but did make me scaredscaredscared of what's going on in all those fics I auto-skip.

3. OMG, I'd completely forgotten about the ring too. (Is it entirely batshit to say that she's married to the Doctor? Maybe an earlier incarnation she met doing UNIT work? Seven was still involved with the Brig in contemporary-ish times according to the PDAs. Or maybe it could be Eight.)

From what I read on the tech support bit, it's a clone of the last month of the old one plus the new stuff, and the post counts started again from 0 at that point, because it apparently would have been too hard to hack or something (but they say they're going to keep archiving old threads at the new one to keep it from crufting up for half an hour every day like it used to, so I don't know whether our counts are going to be some sort of weird rolling thing based entirely on recent activity). They have provided a new field in the profile to put your old count in if you want to, as a sop.

Reading more carefully, filling this in will then make it appear under your name on your posts, thus avoiding newb-appearance. Yay!

1. ...what's going on in all those fics I auto-skip

Usually, the Doctor becomes the mouthpiece for the author's hatred of Martha. I read a story recently in which Martha looks away as the Doctor and Rose kiss. This naturally enrages the Doctor, who accuses her of pettiness and says he won't tolerate "backstabbing or catfights or any other childish behavior." WTF?

1. Is this necessarily a bad thing? I've had a lot of comments like that on my HP fic (DW not so much) and I always assumed it was a compliment. It's harder to impress someone with a fic that's about a ship they don't like than a fic about their OTP, so I'd take 'don't like the ship but liked the fic' as meaning it was extra-good.

why comment on a fic by saying 'well, I don't like the pairing you have written but it was good anyway'.

I got a lot of variations on that for me Rose/One, but I was expecting "EW! Yuck!" so it was actually a pleasant surprise, ahem.

It's there a bit in old school canon with Tegan (end of Time Flight; she came back in Arc of Infinity) and arguably Dodo (she does get mentioned at the end of War Machines but One is very accepting of the idea that she's OK off in the country).
