Her body was crying out for some sleep, yet as she lay in her freshly made bed (a small gift from the TARDIS for looking after her for the last two months) her mind was unable to switch off.

Every fibre in her body ached – it had been a long night and an even longer two months. Yet she somehow managed to stumble out of her bed and get dressed again. Thankfully into her jeans and her t-shirt and not the attire she had become used to recently. Part of her found it to be fun at first – it was like playing a game – but it didn’t last for long. Now, the thought of wearing that dress or re-visiting that period, both of which had repressed her so, made her blood boil.

And she did it all for him.

She wanted to make herself a cup of tea – but her feet seemed to find the console room instead of the kitchen. A place of solace for her these past few months. A place of comfort. One thing she had in common with him.

He was stood in front of her – when he should have been resting, Martha thought. Changing human DNA back into that of a Time Lord is not a simple process. She wasn’t surprised to see him up though. He too had the unfortunate inability to switch his brain off when he needed to. Another thing they had in common.

“Does my voice really sound like this?” He asked her. She wasn’t aware that he had spotted her enter the room. He hadn’t even looked up from the monitor where he was watching the video message he left Martha.

“Yes,” Martha smiled as she walked towards him. “And your hair really does look like that as well.”

He looked up from the monitor, face full of protest. “What’s wrong with my hair?”

“Nothing.” Martha replied with a whisper and a smile that somehow managed to re-assure him.

“Number 4. You. Don’t let me abandon you.” The Doctors voice echoed from the screen and filled the now silent console room.

“You do understand, don’t you Martha?” She knew what he was talking about. How could she not? “It wasn’t me . .”

“Yeah, but you asked her.” She interrupted his attempted apology so she could say what she wanted to before she inevitably forgave him.

“What?”

“You asked her to come with us. You. Not him.”

“What was I supposed to do Martha? Mmm? None of this was her fault. I had to make it up to her somehow.”

“I s’pose.” She didn’t sound convinced.

“Besides, she didn’t want me, Martha. She wanted John Smith. He’s gone now. You have to remember Martha, that it was him that wanted the marriage and the family. Not me.”

“So what do you want, Doctor?” She asked. Perhaps fishing for a reply that she so wanted to hear, but knew she would never get.

“This. This life, the TARDIS. You.” He stopped to gage her reaction. “But Martha, you have to understand, I. . .”

“I know, I know.” She protested so he didn’t have to tell her. Tell her that he doesn’t feel the same way as she does.

She finally looked up at him. Into his eyes. “I thought I was going to lose you.”

He took one step forward and held placed his hands on her shoulders. “Martha, you were brilliant. You did everything I asked of you. I would never have abandoned you intentionally.”

Finally she smiled. Which made him smile. “I know.”

“I seem to be indebted to you again. You have a habit of bailing me out.” He smirked.

“Good job I’m here then, really isn’t it?” She gently punched his chest in a joking manner to ease the tension that was now slowly lifting. He didn’t reciprocate.

“I owe you, big time.” His eyes were full of sorrow and gratitude. He had done it again somehow. She had forgiven him.

But she wasn’t couldn’t miss an opportunity like this.

“Yes. You do. That Mr. Smith was a messy buggar.”

He was laughing now.

“I got on my hands and knees and scrubbed your floor. You definitely owe me for that one.” She continued.

“I seem to remember a certain housemaid slapping her Master as well.”

“Yeah well you deserved it.”

“That is a first. Being slapped by a mother and her daughter. Obviously runs in the family.”

“You’re not getting off that lightly, mate. Have you seen the state of the kitchen floor? There’s rubber gloves in the sink under the cupboard if you’re worried about your precious Time Lord hands.”

“Right then, Miss. Jones. That kitchen floor is going to look so good, you can eat your dinner off it.” He bounced towards the corridor to get to work.

She turned around and failed to hide the grin growing across her face “Depends on what you cook for me though doesn’t it.”

“Cooking? I’m doing the cooking as well. Right. That’s ok. I can do that.” He made his way down the corridor and Martha turned to smile at the console. Knowing that she too was happy that he was back.

The silence didn’t last long as the Doctor came running back into the room, “What do humans eat again?”

Martha laughed. This is what she wanted.
