Title: The Yes Man (or four times Jackson Lake made the Doctor change his mind, and one time he didn't have to say anything)
Author:
magicallaw
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Jackson with a brief appearance from Rosita
Spoilers: The Next Doctor
“Now, Doctor, it is Christmas after all – I insist.”
“Sorry, Jackson, I’m afraid I can’t say yes to this one. You see, a while back – well, in just over a 100 years time, actually – I promised myself I’d never drink again. Jackson, take it from me, if you ever want Rosita to never speak to you again, drink a bottle of Pernod and show up at the shop she’s working in just to really embarrass her.”
“It’s one sherry, Doctor, that’s all,” Jackson said, pretending that he understood what the Doctor had just said.
The Doctor took the glass from his new friend, held it to the light and eyed it suspiciously. He then ‘whistled at it’, “just to be sure.”
Two and a half hours later and not only had the Doctor ‘written’ I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day over a century early, but he couldn’t help to wonder what it would be like to say yes more often.

The Doctor popped his head around the TARDIS door and was greeted by a familiar settling of snow over a very familiar part of town. “That’s odd,” he muttered to himself.
He wandered around a bit thinking that it could be a few years before he was last year so there was nothing to worry about.
Then he heard his name. “Who, me?” he asked.
“Yes, you, you idiot,” cried Rosita, running towards him suddenly. “Duck!”
“Where?” The Doctor spun round, looking anxiously for ten foot robotic duck tormenting the city.
Well, it wasn’t that unlikely.
“No, DUCK!”
“Oh, you mean duck, duck. As opposed to duck, that is.” And with that, a snowball hit him hard at the back of his head. “You know, the temptation to say something that rhymes with duck is a little overwhelming.”
“What was that?” Jackson asked, appearing from nowhere.
“Nothing,” the Doctor mumbled.
“Doctor,” Jackson said, embracing him, “it’s good to see you. But what brings you here?”
“Dunno,” the Doctor said, rubbing the back of his head, “the TARDIS seems to like you.”
“Well, she has good timing – ”
“For a time machine,” the Doctor added.
“Yes, for a time machine,” Jackson laughed. “You see, I was teaching Frederick just how important it is to throw a snow ball properly.”
“Well he seems to be doing just fine by my reckoning,” the Doctor winced.
“Oh, I was thinking he could benefit from an expert in such matters,” Jackson said with a wink in the Doctor’s direction.
“Me? Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. I couldn’t possibly condone such behaviour. Nope, sorry. In fact, I’d best be off actually.” Jackson looked understandably rejected. “See you around,” the Doctor said over his shoulder.
“Goodbye, Doctor,” Jackson said quietly. “Come on, Frederick, Rosita, let’s go.” Unfortunately, their sombre exit was interrupted by a snowball hitting Jackson square on the back.
“First rule of snowball fights,” the Doctor said, “is never turn your back on your opponents.”
Perhaps Jackson didn’t have to try too hard to get the Doctor to stay this time, but he had to try a little harder to make him stay for dinner afterwards.
It worked, though.

“Doctor,” said Jackson, “tell me, tell me what it is like out there. What it’s really like. In time and space.”
“You know what it’s like.”
“Very well, tell me about something I didn’t see. Something that wasn’t on that imprint.”
The Doctor looked at Jackson blankly: he knew far too well where this conversation was going.
“Tell me about your home...”
“No.”
“... tell me where you come from...”
“No.”
“... I want to hear all about the planet of the Time Lords.”
“You really don’t like the word ‘no’, do you?”
“Doctor, you saw me at my lowest. I had lost everything. I know you have dark secrets locked away as well.”
“How observant of you.”
Jackson looked at the Doctor expectantly: he knew where this conversation was going.
“Gallifrey. It was called Gallifrey.”
Jackson didn’t ask what the Doctor meant by ‘was’; he told him eventually.
+++
“You’re a very persuasive man, Jackson Lake,” the Doctor said, grateful of the fact that the term ‘easy’ hadn’t been invented yet.
+++
The Doctor approached the old house by the University. He had to admit he wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing here, but he was here nonetheless.
“Merry Christmas?” the Doctor said when Jackson opened the door, a little unsure of the date.
“You’re about a week or so late, my friend,” Jackson said as he left the door open for the Doctor and returned to his place by the fire.
The Doctor followed him in, but he couldn’t help noticing something. “Bit quiet in here, isn’t it?”
Jackson laughed quietly. “How observant of you, Doctor. Frederick is away at school and Rosita... Well, she left.”
“I know that feeling.”
“Married,” Jackson continued.
“Oh.”
“And you Doctor, do you have a travelling companion at the moment? Are you on your own as well?”
“What, you think if I had a companion I’d leave them in the TARDIS and not bring them to see my old mate Jackson?”
Jackson smiled. Then neither of them said anything, and the TARDIS left London with a new companion on board that night.
In style.
