It was less than two hours since he had said no to her. Technically, that ‘no’ still stood firm. That was something he kept reminding himself when he wondered how he’d ended up back on the bus with Christina straddling him on the backseat, slowly removing his tie.

“I’ve never had the need to drive,” she told him. Given that the 200 had ended up in a tree on Hampstead Heath... he could believe it. Not quite the getaway either of them had hoped for, admittedly, but it did have its advantages.

“Technically you were flying, but still, you might have told me,” he said.

“Sorry, was a bit busy trying to get away from the police. Still,” she said, “you’re here now. So how did you fix it?”

Jumpstarting it with the TARDIS meant that its perception filter had temporarily transposed itself to the bus. They were out of sight – for now – and Christina was free to make her getaway. A brilliant plan if the Doctor might say so himself. Unfortunately, this was something that he was currently unable to do as Christina had found that spot on his neck, just below the hairline and, well, “Oh god,” was all he could manage.

He decided that it was probably best to end this now before it went too far. But, to his astonishment, her bra was surprisingly easy to unfasten.

“Have you ever done it on public transport?” she asked him, pushing him onto his back.

“Erm, does a Police Public Call Box count?”

“Now, that sounds more like it,” said Christina, finally taking her top off. “Keep going.”

+++

“So,” he asked, as he finished tying his shoe laces, “where will you go from here?”

“I don’t know. Where would you recommend?”

“Now, if you wanted to stay out of trouble, you’re really asking the wrong person.”

“Who said anything about staying out of trouble?”

The Doctor smiled. “I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

“And what about you?”

“Oh, you know, onwards, upwards, sideways, backwards. I’m pretty flexible really.”

“Mm, I could tell.”

“Ah, now, I don’t make a habit of this,” he warned her.

“It didn’t feel like you were out of practice,” she said, with an all too familiar smirk on her face.

“Really?” he asked, with a smug little smile. “Well, there is this one woman... She’s an archaeologist. You’d like her.”

“So that’s why you said no. You are a dark horse, aren’t you.”

“No, no, I didn’t mean – ”

“It’s fine, Doctor. Really,” she assured him.

The Doctor made his way to the exit. “I’d better be...”

“Yes.”

“Well then... See you.”

“Bye, Doctor.” She watched him leave then slowly made her way to the doorway. “Oh, Doctor,” she called after him, stopping him just before he reached the TARDIS. “I was thinking. You say you have a ‘friend’ who’s an archaeologist. Well, did it occur to you that an archaeologist might be interested in our little wreckage we’ve got for ourselves here?”

The Doctor thought about this for a moment. “Give me twenty seconds.”

+++

Nineteen seconds later...

River stepped on board the bus. “I read about this,” she said in amazement. “Might have known it had something to do with you.”

“Well, you know me,” the Doctor said, hopping on board himself.

“Wait a minute, if you’ve read about this...” Christina said, “... Well, what happens to me?”

River looked at the Doctor. “Now, would this count as spoilers, or just helping the plot along?”

“Oh,” the Doctor said, thinking about it, “everyone needs a nudge in the right direction every now and then.”

River smiled, then turned to Christina. “They never find the bus.”

“Oh,” said Christina, thinking the worst. “I see.”

“No,” said the Doctor, “not necessarily.”

+++

“Welcome to the 51st century, Lady Christina De Souza.”

“This is... this is... incredible.” Even more so, considering she was lucky not to be spending the night in a police cell. But now, 30,000 years in her future... Well, the possibilities were endless.

River was checking the bus for damage as the Doctor walked up to her, still watching Christina’s reaction. “I love this bit,” he beamed.

“This is amazing. It’s completely untouched by the vortex,” said River.

“The vortex isn't as tough as those wormholes. Besides, this is made of strong stuff,” the Doctor said, giving it a whack. “Don’t want to hear you complaining about London Transport again,” he shouted over to Christina.

Watching Christina wander off to explore, River turned to the Doctor and said, “Something tells me she won’t be using it again in a hurry.”

+++

“I hear she’s making quite a name for herself,” River told the Doctor on his next visit.

“She’s a high-class thief, that’s sort of what they do.”

“There was some trouble at the Royal Embassy and I said I’d help out, but I’m not sure what to do about it.”

“You could come to bed.”

“You’re not very helpful,” she told him.

“And you’re no fun.”

“I was thinking perhaps we could get away for a bit.”

“Ooh, now you’re talking.”

“You see, I sort of promised...”

“Promised who?”

“Hello, Doctor,” came a familiar voice from the doorway.

“Well?” asked River.

The Doctor was silent for a moment. “I’m sure there’s a joke about a Lord, a Lady and a Professor walking into a bar, but it’s beyond me at the moment.”

“I’ll take that as a yes, then,” said River.

“Look, I’ve even got my rucksack,” said Christina, linking arms with the Doctor as they made their way to the TARDIS.

“Prepared for anything, you.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“Trust me, he means it,” said River, with a suggestive waggle of her eyebrows.

“Perhaps that joke about a Lord, a Lady and a Professor should be about them all being sat on a bus,” Christina offered.

“No, the bus stays here now,” the Doctor told her. “A Lord, a Lady and a Professor in a Police Box? Does that work?”

Christina smiled. “Judging by your past adventures, Doctor, I’m sure we could do a lot more than just tell jokes.”
